The artist created this piece during the debates for the most recent US election. And specifically during the time when candidate Donald Trump paid a visit to Mexico´s president, Enrique Peña Nieto. Peña Nieto is depicted here as a puppet, because it is the artist´s view (and many other people´s as well) that Trump used this invitation from Peña Nieto, to help his own campaign. The Mexican president received a lot of backlash in the press and from the public after the meeting took place.
This visit happened a short time before Mexico´s Independence Day, which is the 16th of September. The celebration of Independence Day in Mexico is commonly referred to as “El Grito” or “The Cry,” because of the shouting “VIVA MEXICO!” that can be heard all night during the festivities, and which was supposedly originally shouted by Miguel Hidalgo on September 16, 1810, to motivate his people to revolt against the Spanish regime. In the piece it looks as though Trump is shouting something as well.
